Is using the tabs/watching live performances a good idea?

Should such a song not exist over at Frets on Fire or something, or a .midi file not exist, or whatever.
October 12, 2015 at 3:55 am #457407Yes. Sure. Why not? Anything that helps you figure out what’s happening in a crowded mix.
October 12, 2015 at 9:55 am #457413Yes but always cum grano salis. Live performances (or even just musid videos) are not faithful representation and tabs tend to simplify and repeat. We all used tabs to author so they are a great help but you can’t rely on them blindly.

Exactly this. There is a PS charter over at FoF and he/she uses tabs blindly (I could tell by the chart and the tab I downloaded), and just copies what they say. Which in turn makes them subpar.
If you’re a musician, do what I do. I use tabs for the most part on everything except drums, so I usually play them on my real guitar, keyboard, etc. to see if the tab sounds right and fix whatever doesn’t.
So just use the tabs kind of like a guide, NEVER rely on them blindly and just copy them, that is one way to make a bad custom.

I am not a musician, I have never played a musical instrument in my life. I copy the tabs, play it through, and if it sounds good, I keep it. Drums are the only thing I rarely use tabs for, since it is so easy to hear what they are playing.
October 12, 2015 at 10:25 pm #457456I say, the more reference material, the better. Ultimately, what you hear in the final song should be what you chart, but often other references will make it easier to figure out exactly what you’re hearing. Like others have said, though, don’t lean on them too much. I’ve found tabs that chart stuff that, while maybe it really is there, is so buried in the mix that people would say the song is overcharted if I put it all in. I’ve also found tabs that are just plain wrong; music transcribers make typos too. On the other hand I’ve seen artists play stuff in music videos that I didn’t think I heard, and then I go and listen again and sure enough, it’s there. I’ve also benefited from YouTube tutorials made by people who show you exactly how to play a particular riff or solo. So other references can definitely help, if you use them wisely.
October 13, 2015 at 6:21 pm #457510I use tabs, I used the tempo map for cool kids and the drums but the drums I had to fix.
Some tabs don’t match with the song like empire of the clouds by iron maiden.

I’m a drummer so…that won’t work ):
Thanks for the input, guys. I’ll use a combination of tabs, live performances, covers, and intuition.
