So… Took the day off from work, picked up the game from GameStop earlier in the afternoon. I’m gonna be brutally honest, please don’t hate my guts… I’m very disappointed so far with this game.
So far I’ve played it for about seven hours, so this is obviously a very early impression of the game, and on day one to boot, so things will likely improve. Also keep in mind that I’m playing with friends on the Xbox One, so these problems may or may not apply to you dependent on your set up.
First, what I do like:
– The UI is not much different from Rock Band 3 when you are in gameplay, and the chart runs at a very consistent 60 fps, which is great. Menus are simple, just like the past games.
– My friend brought over his band in a box, so we got to play the game both ways. The new guitar is not bad as far as build quality IMO, it seems to be fairly sturdy. The drums are alright too, the mic seems the same (I think it may be improved as far as the equipment, not sure the specs of it).
– The adapter for old instruments seems to work well, I noticed no issues with it (opposed to the new instruments other than the mic, which I’ll get to in a moment).
– Dynamic fills and improv solos are a nice new addition to the classic core gameplay mechanics.
What I don’t like:
– The pre-show cutscenes aren’t even there anymore. The most story you really get is the menu text before being shoved into gameplay. I was disappointed by the slim amount of story telling in Rock Band 3, but this is worse so far.
– Character creation is stripped down quite a bit. No face paint, no tats. It SUCKS.
– On a similar note, having played an hour after my two friends left, it seems you can no longer assign your own created characters as stand ins as far as I can tell… that really sucks.
– Animations seem under-baked to me on most songs that I’ve watched the background on while not playing. They seem even downright unfinished on some songs (Halls of Valhalla and that one Protomen song that I can’t remember the name of right now, are by far the worst examples I’ve noticed so far when watching my buddies play while I took food and beer breaks).
– The setlist is by far the weakest of the four for the most part. You can now improv solos but you don’t have many very good songs to do this with. This is going to be very subjective though, and the next issue is mainly why this is a big problem for me to start with.
– A LOT (at least 75%) of my old DLC isn’t loading into the game. For example… ALL of my Iron Maiden DLC is unavailable. Also, I’m noticing that some songs that I’ve already bought are asking me to buy them again. This will hopefully be fixed sooner than later.
– The new guitar and new drums have a lot of issues. The new guitar often just randomly drops out, despite having full charge. Both the guitar and drums will randomly not register strums/hits. This happens constantly for both instruments.
Basically, this game feels really rushed to me, which is a darn shame. It feels like they got the engine working alright on the new hardware, then rushed it out the door. I hope they iron out the issues, but for now, I’m gonna probably sell this game and buy something else. At this point in my life, I need a game I can play immediately after I get out of work without much trouble, and right now, Rock Band 4 doesn’t give me that. I’m sure I’ll pick the game up again some day and I’ll be happy with it, but for now, I need to pass. The DLC issue is what really broke the camels back. Once I know that that is completely fixed, then I may pick it up again, but I really like Rock Band 3 more as far as features and content right now.
Don’t get me wrong, we had some fun playing the game when we switched over to the old instruments, but we definitely wanted more from the setlist, and the new instruments being so buggy was especially disappointing.
October 7, 2015 at 3:56 am #457037yeah i to will stick with Rock Band 3, not that i have played 4, but i will stick to 3 because of all the songs I have got 1220 (more then i thought i would ever download) songs/customs from (RB 1 and 2, AC/DC, and Beatles) thanks Harmonix (customs from C3) Thanks C3,Songs from the forums thanks forum and Songs from (Guitar Hero 1- WoR) thanks Red Octane/Harmonix?
Anyway yes i got a lot of songs Rock Band 1-3 had a lot better setlist, and what Rock Band 4 has like what 9 or 10 songs?
October 7, 2015 at 10:30 am #457044This game was definitely rushed, but it was still fun to play all day yesterday. The only thing that made the experience somewhat unenjoyable was the amount of vocal lag coming through the speakers from the audio coming from my mic while having the in-game vocal volume all the way down. It is really bad and I never had that issue on other RB games. I hope there is a fix for that as it seems I am not the only one experiencing it.
October 7, 2015 at 11:56 am #457047You might have gotten some lemons w/ the new instruments, assuming the firmware is updated (iirc only the PS4 one had the drum hit issue?).
October 7, 2015 at 11:59 am #457048Xbox One had the drum hit issue. The firmware update is supposed to fix it but lots of people on reddit saying it changed nothing.
For me, I can’t tell when it’s my lack of skills or the instruments so it doesn’t bother me too much.

This one, at least, has a response from HMX that it is a bug and will be fixed. The CEO hisself responded, no less.
Whether or not this feature will work at all in Quickplay is, as yet, unknown.
October 7, 2015 at 6:22 pm #457080For those wondering, yes we did update the firmware for both instruments, but it seemed to make no real difference for the drums, and it only slightly helped for the guitar (strums were slightly more responsive, but it still failed to register randomly and still dropped out randomly). As for the vocal lag issue that some have mentioned,I was a bit buzzed by the time I picked up the mic, but I still noticed it to a degree. I thought it was just some sort of vocal delay effect at the time lol
November 9, 2015 at 6:21 pm #459009So, I got the Game yesterday…first I decided to buy guitar hero: live with guitar, played…I mean, the Stages are pretty cool, the atmosphere on some of these with the reaction from the fans and other bandmembers also…the sound itself is worse than all the other gh and rb games…and I don´t know about future plans to import some of other gh songs from the earlier games…
The new guitar…the Idea from the six buttons is not that bad…but the combinations and the playing doesn´t got me that feeling that I have when I play Rock Band! It´s not that authentic!
So I give the game back and instead bought Rock Band 4:
– All my former Instruments work so far with the adapter!
– The sound quality of the songs are even a bit better than in the former games…and in Rock Band 3, I found the Quality was the best of all the other previous gh and rb games! This point is very important to me! It makes a lot of fun again to play some old bought songs again!
– The gameplay itself…still almost the same! You can skip the guitar solos in the songs, but that doesn´t make lots of sense, cause this is a big part of every song…but you can turn this function off…
– As far as I know is, that the RB3-Keyboard will not come back…which is sad
– But as I read here, the old RB Exports will work soon!
In the end, I´m very happy to made this decision to go on RB4!!! Got goosebumps again on Songs like “The show must go on from Queen or “Piece of my heart” from Janis Choplin!!
November 9, 2015 at 6:38 pm #459013Clearly, you must work for Harmonix given this glowing five star review.

November 9, 2015 at 8:39 pm #459017Yeah you´re right, almost forgotten to go on amazon and review it ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” /> Maybe I´m full of love because of that comparison to guitar hero: live…
November 9, 2015 at 8:56 pm #459018Sadly the audio is definitely worse than RB3’s, but I’m glad your setup is not showing it. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif”>
November 9, 2015 at 10:10 pm #459019“Piece of my heart” from Janis Choplin!!
I think that is Janis Jopin and Chopin’s love child ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_biggrin.gif” />

How could it be worse? Old DLC should (hopefully!) sound identical. Or do you just mean the new songs?
November 10, 2015 at 1:10 am #459024Everything sounds different because RB4’s audio engine is different from RB3’s engine. So old songs sound worse than we’re used to in RB3 and new songs don’t sound too good.

So weird. I mean… it’s just an ogg codec that converts it all to a raw (PCM) byte stream. Do you think they intentionally do downsampling to appease increasingly paranoid labels that think people will record songs from the game? (instead of, I dunno, the much simpler route of just torrenting the mp3s directly!)
Or did they mess up the compressor/limiter signal chain so that it’s suffering artifacts not unlike the “Loudness War”?
