I’ve started authoring songs. I’m using a midi as a source, I have done vocal and they were pretty easy. My problem is now with instrument parts, as there are more rows than vocals. I have watched the videos, and read the tutorial. I looks easy watching someone else do it, until you have to do it yourself.

Can someone clarify this statement from the tutorial pdf, to ensure I have the right idea, and i’m on the right track.

    section 5.1, page 9.

So, the first thing is to simplify the track: select all notes to the bottom of an empty row and shift them up with the UP cursor arrow. Do that as many times as you need so that you don’t have any empty row, meaning no row with no notes in it (a row with a single note in a song is not empty).

    Specifically

select all notes to the bottom of an empty row

When I start with the midi there are about 20 rows of notes, the only way I could see if there were empty rows was to zoom right out (as in the image, this is just one instrument).

    Q. Am I trying to condense the midi notes by removing the empty rows between the top and the bottom. Squishing it, so to speak, but retain the horizontal position?

So I right click drag select the rows from the bottom, and move them up, as i’ve done in the red outlined area ?

Next question, is this on the right track? The first and second section (which I lowered) looked the same. So i’m trying to make the whole track look like the bottom section. It’s only rough, still 6 rows.

I wrote this post while trying to work it out, and i think i’ve worked it out.

I’ll probably have more questions, we’ll see how we go.

Yeah all you need to do is keep raising rows so that there are no empty rows, you have done it right. The only reason we do this is for convenience, to make it easier to reduce all the rows down to 5. However, your notes don’t seem to be aligned with the lines, which is a problem. Make sure you have ‘Snap to Grid’ on.
