Having been on baord for a few months now – I am reasonably familiar with the basics of producing a Reaper project for Rockband but would like to expand my expertise. To that end I have been reading in the RBN documentation about more specific EVENTS and VENUE settings etc. for specific camera shots, venue specifics and effects etc.

This may have already been suggested (may alreadt exist… perhaps…?), but what would be handy would be a sample Reaper project for download (for those of us with a similar authoring interest), so that we can see how a Pro would compile a project with specific reference to use of camera shots, solos, drum fills , special venue effets etc. to see how they should be placed and used within the context of a Rockband song.

Would be a great help and the perfect opportunity for some of us to expand our skills in other area of our own projects & compilations that till now have eluded us….

    Thoughts…? :shobon:

If you’d like to see some examples, you could download any song from the database, and import the MIDI file into a blank Reaper project. Then you could look at the Events and Venue tracks for as many songs as you like!

Not really, not many authors work a lot on venues, lighting, etc., so he needs a project that showcases those features.

Hey! I have a project you might be interested in. This is my project file for the song “Jade” I did back in June of last year: http://www.mediafire.com/download/c8izc … f5/Jade.7z

It contains pretty much everything you asked, and then some. If you’re confused about anything, don’t be afraid to ask.

Addy is great at this kind of details so having a sample project from him it’s great for authors who want to learn.

Great – thank you very much, just what is needed. Thanks again.

AddyMilldike: Cripes… that must have taken you flippin’ ages to author…. a text event ‘nightmare’ in VENUE…!

That must have been painstaking blending them all together like that…

That is Addy for you. I recommend nailing perfectly authoring of notes before dipping into the crazyness that is venue editing, but if you want to do that, this is a great sample project.

Haha, you have no idea. Adding up all the autosaves, I ended up spending about 50 hours on this song alone. To be fair, half of that was pro guitar/bass, but still! It really did take “flippin’ ages” to do.

To be honest with you though, you do eventually get a hang of venue authoring (or authoring in general, really). I used to not know anything about anything until I exposed myself to the process of RB authoring and spent a whole summer learning it. It does come to you with time.

As Farottone mentioned though, it is recommended to learn authoring notes before doing venues. For me personally I do venue last, but think of what I can place in the venue track as I’m making the other instruments. I’ll hear an effect in the song and go “Ooh, effect X would go great here!” and proceed to add it into the venue track, but immediately go back to authoring notes. Only after all that’s been said and done will I focus on the venue.

If you are seriously wanting to make custom venues for songs I must warn you though, that often a venue won’t look exactly as you imagine it. There is a lot of trial and error associated with it. And you will make mistakes, we’re human, and it causes venues to look weird (especially if blending is involved).

Although good things can come out of mistakes too. With the RBN song Anubis by Septicflesh I had forgotten to place an effect marker causing the song to blend into a post process over 8 measures as opposed to only 1 beat (only 32x the amount of time it was supposed to, no big deal…). It gave a cool effect so I left it in (

, in case you are curious).
