I’m currently charting a song (that I wrote) that has an absurd amount of chords – mostly because I use major & minor 7ths and weird inversions and all kinds of suspensions and weird stuff like that extremely liberally (and in a pop song, too!) – and I have a few questions regarding 5 lane keys authoring.
First, in y’all’s opinion, should consistency or vibes take precedence? Like, if I have a descending chord line that’s mostly just inversions of chords already used, should I use the chords I already used earlier, or should I just completely ignore them?
Secondly, if motion takes precedence, should I stick with 3-note chords for bigger chords, or would it be alright to expand my range of useable chords a bit and use 2-note chords? I feel like I’d probably still use 3-note chords, but I wanna get a second opinion on things and such.
If anyone wants me to post the song/keys parts I’m authoring to help them form an opinion, I can do so. Thanks ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_emot-3.gif” />
Pro Keys, chart it as it is supposed to play
5-Lane, wrap it so it feels like playing the actual part within the limitations of the chords you have. If there is loads of fast moving chords (like a lead line that is chords) you can wrap it into only G/R, R/Y, B/Y and B/O chords
There are some “standards” in place for PK -> 5 Lane… but they are always subject to some personality and chart dependencies. Usually for me:
Big Chords (7ths, Augmented, Diminished, ect) = 3 note chords
Player-exciting chords (big moments in the song) = 3 note chords
3-note chords (non-prominant or standard/soft) = 2 note chords [spaced such as G-Y, R-B, R-O, ect]
2-note chords (or chord progressions that go up/down a lot) = 2 note chords [touching such as G-R, B-O, ect]
If you want to PM me the file I can transpose the PK_Expert into 5Lane_Expert and show you what I would do?
