Adding Album Art

I have a technical question about altering the album art displayed in-game. There are a couple of cover songs that I would really like to display the actual album cover from the real band – namely “Paranoid” (custom) and “My Sharona” (official DLC). In both cases, I have added artwork for the cover in the gen subdirectory (for PS3). In the case of “My Sharona”, the artwork was generated via C3 Tools. For “Paranoid”, I copied the file from “Iron Man” and renamed it appropriately. I also added/changed the album_art entry in the songs.dta file to TRUE. Somehow, these songs still display the default “Rock Band” artwork in game.

I’ve done this before with other customs, no problem. I’m thinking the issue is that both songs are covers with song.dta entries that came from HMX. That leads me to believe that there might be something else in the song.dta that needs to be changed and I’m just missing it…

I was also wondering why some songs have (album_art TRUE) while other songs have (‘album_art’ 1). I’ve tried it both ways and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in this case.

Have you rebuilt your cache since making the change?

tsk tsk espher. PS3 users don’t have a cache.

Dahnlee, the problem is most likely stemming from the fact that on disc, RB3 has a bunch of songs.dta files, and that overrides anything you do to the actual song files. I don’t know if/how you can get around it, but that’s the problem.

        Thanks for chiming in guys!

Nemo – understand about the different song.dta files. The file for “My Sharona” is actually in a different subdirectory than the 20 free song subdirectory that all the PS3 customs go into, so I am editing the right DTA file(s). Interestingly enough, PS3 does not lock down the DTA file with encryption like it does with the MIDI.

I looked a little more closely and both songs have a xxx_weight.bin file in the gen subdirectory. I think the BIN file is an archive like a ZIP or RAR file. Do you have any experience working with this type of file? I’m thinking this was an earlier format since both of these songs date back to the earliest RB1 releases…

I got the art to display for these by changing alternate path to false in the dta. This was on the xbox.

        #431354

        Clintilona,

What is the actual text that you use in the DTA file? Is it (alternate_path FALSE) or (alt_path FALSE) or something else?

Does it matter where the command is placed within the song entry?

        Thanks!

        #431356

        alternate_path FALSE

I have it right above album_art TRUE in the dta.

        #431358

Curses! I still can’t get it to work.

I don’t suppose you would be willing to cut and paste the entire DTA entry for one of the songs where you got this to work? Maybe there is some other command that I’m missing…

        #431359

Are you using the Harmonix sond id or giving it a custom song id? I am using custom id’s.

        #431363

I’m using a custom ID for Paranoid, but the HMX ID for My Sharona.

        Thanks clintilona!!!

This actually helped – I can’t solve the problem, but I think I understand it better now. Actually your suggestion about changing the song ID was key too. I thought I had given Paranoid a custom ID, but I was wrong. The RB1 ID for Paranoid is 30. When I change that ID to anything else, it totally locks up the PS3. I put that together with what Nemo wrote and I guess there must be something imbedded in the game files (possibly the RB1 export data) that locks down this song. Probably locks down Enter Sandman as well.

I may just have to live with not having the album art. I do really appreciate your help though – Thanks again!!!

        #431379

Are you also changing the title name? Instead of paranoid, use baranoid or anything else. Instead of mysharona, use anything else. I just aded some z’s to the end (mysharonazzz). From experience, not changing those will lock up the game.

        #431390

        BINGO! That’s the trick.

        Paranoid is now completely fixed.

I can get My Sharona to work as well, but I lose the lip-sync. Because the oldest DLC have BIN files instead of MILO, the game can’t find the Dry Vox if I change the name and ID. Does your Xbox version of MY Sharona have a MILO file in the gen subdirectory?

Sorry, my brain glossed over that. That’s what I get for trying to help. Back to REAPER for me!
