This popped up on a feed I follow. Looks kind of interesting. Although I am starting to think that HMX should finish a game before announcing more. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />

Speaking of unfinished games, anything new with Chroma?

What is up with HMX trying to put rhythm elements into action games lately anyways? Don’t they know the only game ever that seems to do that well is Beat Hazard and that is because the music really isn’t that big part of the gameplay itself?

Because most of the team are musicians and they are known for rhythm games?

I thought the Bit.Trip series blends music and gameplay well with each other.

My point is, why are they trying to put music gimmicks into games where it seems to not actually work really well with the gameplay (having to be on beat with the music to reload in a FPS is a silly idea IMO) instead of just doing what they do best, make games where the music interaction is the main point of play and gameplay is built around that, rather than putting the music element into another gameplay environment. We have tons of “rhythm indie action games” out there on Steam and such, but we are in a dire lack of actual music games lately as far as I have seen.

When its alpha finished, the response was so lukewarm that I think the project is dead in the water now.

Chroma had a lot of neat mechanics and I liked the way they combined to make for a unique dynamic in the arena shooter space. A lot of the mechanics needed balancing/tuning (it was an alpha), and things like feedback to shots/hits were middling to poor, so it had some ways to go, but the fundamentals were there. Lukewarm with cautious optimism is how I took most of the feedback from people who played it for more than an hour.

Not sure why it gets so much criticism or why Harmonix gets grief for experimenting in the space, though.

There’s nothing wrong with using experimentation in order to find fun and unique gameplay mechanics if it’s well-executed.

Bullet Hell shooters is one of my favorite game genres so I’m actually stoked for this game.
