No Actual Tutorials?

Either I am missing something, or there are no real tutorials on how to use Reaper to author songs from scratch.

I got all the necessary programs and plugins, I read just about all of the RBN docs mirror, and I’ve checked the stickies up and down, but the only two “tutorials” are Vocals Authoring (I’m trying to do drums only), and a stream of a user making songs. Am I just supposed to pay more attention to the stream and bounce off of that progress, or is that actually just a recording that explains everything? Because as for everything else that I went through in the forums, there is no “How to get started” or tutorial on the actual process of throwing color gems together <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_cheeky.001.gif” />

I’ll +1 this and say that there should be accessible tutorials to make customs. I could help out with those if needed.

To answer your question, no I don’t believe there are any official tutorials other than the ones you mentioned.

You really should at least make an effort of reading who did the live stream and what it covers, before asking if there are no tutorials…

I am pretty sure there is a own section on how to use Reaper there somewhere if memory serves me right, and if not placing notes is really as easy as doubleclicking inside the MIDI editor window

(words)… and a stream of a user making songs.

Yeah, just some user making songs.

Probably some rando noob who thinks he can author. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_wink.gif” />

Guys, to be fair, what pksage did wasn’t really much of a tutorial. It was more of a video on how to use REAPER, how to draw notes, how to use the template, and generally how to do this charting thing, but it wasn’t, you know, a tutorial.

We always get asked “where is the tutorial”.

Find a way to create time out of nothing, and you will have your robust tutorial.

The closest you have for now are the livestream videos, which are functionally a basic tutorial — they go over REAPER functionality/the interface (to some extent), and discuss basic concepts. Take that, then take the initiative to begin experimenting with that and the myriad resources available to you. Perhaps at some point we can start a mini video tutorial series on how to perform simple actions, but there will still be a lot of trial and error required.

At the most basic level, remember that nearly everything you need to do from an authoring perspective (e.g. excluding audio prep, packaging, album art) involves clicking and subsequently dragging in an ordinal direction, navigating a menu, or double-clicking somewhere — the particulars of what that action will do in specific locations are documented across all of the provided resources. <img decoding=” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”>

I appreciate all replies, even the overused sarcastic ones. I agree that I should have really watched the stream first, but I am in a position where I am out of town and on a connection that is far too slow to load any videos. I just wanted to make sure I could get all of my resources together before I get back to town and try to author, but it seems that you all have answered my question. I suppose the stream is a recording after all and will cover all that I need to know.

          Thanks, mates

that’s the spirit. since we don’t get paid for anything we do here, some of us function on exchange of sarcasm and (bad) jokes. it’s the only way to feel alive, you know. :aaaaa:

I know it’s discouraging to hear, but the try and learn aspect is actually really helpful for becoming an author.

The couple of stream videos are pretty helpful in some ways, but yes, they do lack actual “tutorial” aspects. However, this site can be a huge help; especially this sections. Learning the program basics are huge, and truthfully, the program itself is harder to understand than the actual charting. I was able to dive in and chart out a song really easily (poorly, but easily ha) when I first started. However, making it compile was the big pain.

I remember my first few charts I had half a dozen posts in this forum sections. I never really learned the difference between Track Name and Text Events, which caused a lot of problems. The RBN Doc (you can find links here) is a huge help for a lot of the nit-picky things.

I know for me personally, the midi exporting, audio files, and Magma were the biggest parts of my early problems. There are a lot of keyboard shortcuts that help with things here, but that is really more of something you’ll have to ask and have taught in another post.

Also, the search function on this website can be pretty bad at times, so don’t get frustrated by that. At first, you may just want to go through all the Customs Support and Authoring Tools Support posts to see some of the common things that come up.

Eventually I might do a How-To video for Magma. It seems a lot of people find it difficult to use.

That could be really helpful for some people. I know myself that was really confusing at first. You have to test the midi first which if you exported more than what you have finished might not go correctly… then you need to get the audio stuff right. I had to learn about rendering in order to get a 16 or 24 PCM files (correct at 44100 or whatever), and then to use the audio files in the Magma location of the same bitrate and such.

Make sense once you learn it, but even explaining it in words feels weird ha.

I know the proper hand-holding steps aren’t there, but it only makes it a slower learn that makes you go over your mistakes and get better. I was going to write a guide in Spanish because it was requested, but i never gor an answer.
