I thought i would give authoring another go. This time with a particular favorite song of mine from the 80’s, namely Joe Jacksons Steppin out. I wanted to try out something with a simple drum line as that is what I got stuck on previously when doing Focus – Sylvia.
What have I done so far:-
Tempo Mapping
Vocal Pitch and lyrics
Pro Keys (Expert)
Drums (Expert)
Bass (All difficulties)
5 lane Keys (All difficulties)
Overdrive sections
Yet to do:-
Venue events
Fine tuning
There is no guitar part on this song, so I didn’t need to worry about that.
Current rb3con is available for download here. I will say that the bass line is difficult, but accurate, likewise with the pro keys. I hope for the next version that I will have out in a couple of days, that the other difficulties will be done along with the lyrics.

June 12, 2014 at 9:37 pm #422375I decompiled the MIDI and Mogg files so I could get a look at the charts, and I noticed that one of the audio files seems corrupted in some way. When decompiling a RB3con with C3ConTools, the audio is split into two audio files per track: one right audio track and one left audio track. However, one of the tracks with the song’s audio in it (I think it’s the right side) sounds choppy when decompiled.
I just felt the need to bring it up here. I don’t know if it’s like that in-game, or if it’s a decompiler problem, because I have yet to test the song in-game.
EDIT: After using my own MP3 audio, I noticed a few things with your charts.
Drums – You charted them backwards. If you are left handed that is fine, but you need to chart the song as it’s played right-handed, which means snares on red, hi-hats on blue. I also noticed you did not chart any crashes at all.
Pro Keys – Improper wrapping of higher chords. When the chords are playing at a lower octave they’re nice and accurate, but when at a higher octave, it appears that you’ve opted for making the highest notes in some chords inaccurate, when the proper thing to do in this situation would be to “wrap” the highest chords by lowering them down an octave (so that current B3-G#3-E3 and A#3-F#3-D#3 chords are actually G#3-E3-D#3 and F#3-D#3-C#3 chords respectively, for example). Also, with chords you need at least an 8th-note-wide space between the chord and the next note, where it seems you currently have a 32nd-note-wide space after chords.
This is a song I would really like to play on Rock Band, so thanks for attempting to chart it. Hopefully these things will help point you in the right direction. I’ll have bass notes later, I did notice some things, though due to time constraints I can’t make pointers for that ATM.

If the DTA says bass is one channel, only one channel will be in the bass line. It’s not a random 1-2 1-2 1-2 of the channels.
However, one of the tracks with the song’s audio in it (I think it’s the right side) sounds choppy when decompiled.It’s the same audio bug that has been mentioned and resolved countless times.
This is the most recent thread on the same issue…

My mistake. Easily changed. Also i’ve listened to the song so many times and never heard a Cymbal crash, just listened to it again and there they are. Now added to the chart.

The song is mostly within the 2 octave limit of the controller, save for about 3 or 4 of the chords. I decided to eliminate the top note on each the chord as it was the same note, just an octave higher as the lower note on the chord. Doing a wrap around could probably assist with the shift heavy nature of the song. Also the gaps have been extended.

Was the audio okay? I used mono silence files for most of the parts, except for drums which required stereo with the main file in backing. I tried it on the 360 and it sounded okay to me. However my hearing may be off (see crash issue above).

Is there any reason that they would not show up as an option in game?
Its currently saying there is no part, everything is ticked where it should be and it compiled alright.

This usually happens when you haven’t updated the cache, and it’s using the previous version. Make sure C3 Magma has Options / Append song ID to song ID checked.

Created all Bass difficulties, got the vocals working. I know that the vocals will need fine tuning, I just wanted to get them mostly working.
Drums have been altered, though not made easier for the other difficulties yet.
Another question I have is about how I simplified the Bass from Expert to Hard. I didn’t just erase notes, I changed the style.

June 16, 2014 at 6:40 pm #422668OMG……IVE WANTED THIS SONG FOREVER BEING AN 80’S BABY MYSELF…..THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH….just finished playing drums…good job..I think there are to many extra notes at the end…other than that…no complaints here…
