I’ve got a question for charters.

How long does it normally take you to do a song? I’m working on a song (To The Moon by Dunderpatrullen) and I just feel as if I’m taking longer than most people can track a song. I’ve gotten the entire keys tracked and a minute of bass tracked. I don’t have a multitrack for the song. The real question is, am I doing good timing? I only started working on it April 24.

I think it all depends on the person. Prior to today, I had no job and tons of free time, so I’d mess around with charting on and off throughout the day, and stay up super late finishing songs. Now I might put them out a bit less frequently.

Between 8-48 hours per song depending on how complex/poorly mixed it is for me

I did my first chart in about a day and a half (probably about 8 hours). It was extremely copy-paste friendly, and vocal timing was poor, but the rest of the chart was in pretty good shape.

It’s not uncommon for me to spend a couple of hours on vocals or venue alone nowadays.

I would say I usually target

How long does it take? Too long!

Generally, for a 4:30 song (depends entirely on song complexity, muddiness, etc):

TM: 1 – 2 hours (less time with a clear waveform)

      Guitar, with CAT-assisted reductions, OD: 3 – 5 hours

Vocals, incl lyrics, PMs, OD: 2 – 4 hours

      Bass, with CAT-assisted reductions, OD: 3 – 4 hours

      Playtesting & polishing: 2 – 3 hours

No drums, no keys, no harmonies, auto-gen venue, no “true” practice sections (I will may be starting to include “true” practice sections soon). Added up, it totals between 11 and 18 hours, give or take. Before I began adding bass and reductions and paying closer attention to details, it was probably closer to 10 – 12 hours per song, sometimes less if there was a lot of cut and paste. During the winter months, this could mean 3 songs per week. In the summer, I’ll be lucky if it’s one. >
