How many alternative buttons are there for each instrument on Rock Band 3? I’m curious. I know the “Back” button can be used for Overdrive for pretty much any instrument except drums. I also know the keypad’s up and down arrow keys can be used for strumming on the guitar, instead of the normal strummer, but are there any others?

April 18, 2014 at 12:10 am #418112Everybody probably knows of this, but on the RB3 keyboard when playing 5 lane, there is 2 different Keys for each color, so you can essentially alt strum stuff if you use both hands on the different keys representing the same colors.

- You can press the face buttons to play the pads as well. They’re good for mashing on during a Big Rock Ending, but I doubt its effectiveness.
- If you have cymbals on your kit, the ever-so-useful Drum Navigation modifier in Rock Band 3 becomes even more useful as the cymbals can also be used in menus the same way as pressing the face buttons do (song details, rating, etc.).
GUITAR/BASS
- The small fret buttons on a Rock Band guitar controller do the same as the large fret buttons, except during a solo, you don’t need to use the strum bar to play the notes. They also can be mashed on during a Big Rock Ending. This is the only reason I ever play guitar in this game.
- If you have a Rock Band 2 guitar or newer, you can plug in a pedal and activate overdrive with that.
KEYS
- As of a few recent patches to Rock Band 3, you can plug in a pedal and activate overdrive with it.

What pedals and what cables are compatible/needed for this to work? This would help me so much

- A kick pedal from/for a Rock Band drum kit will work.
- There’s also an official product for it as well (okay, it was primarily meant for guitar, but still).
Just plug that sucker into the jack on the right side of the keyboard and you’re good to go.

Niiiiiice, thanks for letting me know about this, now I don’t have to distract myself from my vocals to help my keyboardist activate his OD

Oh. Didn’t know about the pedal thing either for overdrive but I don’t use any Rock Band guitars…
Would love to use the pedal instead of the back button cause the back button on my current guitar is kinda small. (On others, it is big and my hand is resting on it, so thusly I just push back a little to activate
).
April 18, 2014 at 3:57 am #418132I’ve found the pedal activation to be most useful on pro keys, if you have to cheese it and use two hands. Also moderately useful on pro guitar if you don’t want to tilt it.
April 18, 2014 at 1:55 pm #418146I have a few PaperJamz drum pedals that I picked up for $5 on clearance that work as a plug-in overdrive pedal for the guitar and keys. I imagine thy work for the drums too but they are small.
