While some albums on my “Top 10” change periodically, there’s some consistant places that haven’t changed much over the years. Here they are, in alphebetical order by artist.

– Dream Theater – Octavarium (To me, this is pretty much the penical of Dream Theater’s career. There’s a great mix of the heavy and not-so-heavy stuff that truly works here.)

– Genesis – Selling England by the Pound (By far one of the best prog rock albums there is. There isn’t a single song on here you can convince me isn’t beautiful in it’s own way.)

– iwrestledabearonce – It’s All Happening (This album is noisy and vicious, with an unrestrained rage. And that is why I appreciate it for just how zany and batshit-crazy it is.)

– iwresltedabearonce – Late for Nothing (I wouldn’t try to put two albums by the same artist on a list like this, but this album is so much different that it’s practically a different band [well at least there’s a different lead singer here]. This one is much more melodic, but to me it’s certainly a welcome change. There’s still plenty of the heavy stuff here, but Courtney’s melodic singing style really suits the music here.)

– Muse – HAARP (Yes, I know, a live album. But what if I were to tell you that almost every song here is better than the studio version? The overall sound is a bit heavier, and there’s a lot of emphasis on improv playing (as well as borrowed riffs from other songs), and it suits the music great for the most part.)

– Ne Obliviscaris – Portal of I (By far my favorite album of 2012. While some of you may remember me being a super-fan of this band on the Rock Band forums, most of you have probably never heard of this band. This is essentially progressive death/black metal with classical elements. And it is one of the most amazing things you will ever hear.)

– Pearl Jam – Ten (There isn’t a single song on here that I couldn’t describe as “epic” in some way. Even the slower songs have that feel of being “big,” which is something I really love about this album.)

– Sum 41 – Chuck (So when you think Sum 41, you probably think of the poppy stuff, probably from their earlier years. This album is essentially them going from pop-punk to almost purely punk [and sometimes metal]. I like how there’s still the sense of melody and such, but there’s also a much heavier vibe to it, and the lyrics are a bit more angsty than previous albums. I think I love this album because it’s not only a band’s shift to a more serious tone, but also a damn awesome experience.)

– System of a Down – Toxicity (One of the first metal albums I’ve heard in it’s entirety. I really like the style here, which is a little bit heavier than their later stuff [not saying their other stuff isn’t heavy, though], and has a bit of a “groove” in some songs, while also being rather chaotic in others.)

– Yes – Fragile (Yes is one of the most technical prog bands that were around in the 70’s. And while some of their songs they’re known for are a little more towards the “pop” side of things [such as “Owner of a Lonely Heart,”] this album is a prime example of their mix of technical prog stuff such as Heart of the Sunrise, and more “sensible” works, such as South Side of the Sky. Really worth a listen if you like prog albums with both truly technical work and simple-yet-beautiful melodies.)

Chuck really is a great album. Totally surprised by it.
