Big week this week! If you ever wondered why Harmonix would sometimes have crazy huge weeks followed by, like, a 4-pack, let me tell you. There are reasons. Not that next week is a 4-pack, or anything. It’s just a pain to schedule songs.
Let’s start with the 17th-best selling album of all time: Alanis Morissette’s blockbuster Jagged Little Pill! Alanis has been a cornerstone of Rock Band’s female presence since RB2, and with this release she adds a second lady-fronted album to the catalog (after No Doubt’s The Singles, though we never got “Trapped in a Box”, so this is kind of the first!) Each of these songs is a big deal simply because the album is a big deal, but many of you will especially remember “All I Really Want”, “Hand in My Pocket”, and “You Learn” from the radio. According to mega-author farottone, few of the songs are engaging on drums, but the album is loaded with challenging guitar patterns and Alanis’s unique vocal style. This release also includes “Your House”, the a cappella bonus track from most versions of the album. No half measures! Demand only the best! If you’re not very familiar with Alanis but enjoy this album, listen to her earlier music for a real trip. Jagged Little Pill is just…something else, man. (“You Oughta Know” is exportable from RB2’s on-disc setlist. “Head Over Feet” and “Ironic” are available as official pre-RB3 DLC. “Perfect” and “Right Through You” were featured in previous C3 packs: Powerful Female Voices and The Right Pack, respectively.)
We continue our apparent Canadian theme with the Canadian post-grunge band Default, who are brand new to the RB franchise! ws54 has authored three of their biggest singles for your tortured post-grunge vocals pleasure. The biggest of the songs is possibly “Wasting My Time” from the band’s debut album The Fallout; it hit #1 on the Canada charts and reached #13 in the US. “Deny”, from the same album, was also a big hit, though, and is a little more upbeat and hard-rock-y than “Wasting My Time”. “Sick and Tired”, the final single from that album, rounds out the pack. If you’re into bands like Nickelback or Shinedown (for whom ws54 has also authored a pack), these songs will be right up your alley.
Finally, we’ve got some songs that only customs could provide. If you’re nerdy enough to read this post, odds are good that video games other than Rock Band are a large part of your life. Video game scores can resonate with us even more powerfully than regular music because of our positive associations with the game in question, and now you can bring that feeling to Rock Band! The brand-new song in this pack is the title theme from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, recently re-released in HD for the Wii U. It’s a beautiful arrangement of acoustic guitar, natural percussion, and flute. Thanks, PikminGuts92!

We’ve also got three From the Vault releases by the prolific TrojanNemo and Nightmare Lyre. The theme from the Silent Hill franchise has some crazy strumming going on in the guitar chart, and may or may not cause Pyramid Head to kill you if you don’t FC it. The Max Payne theme is a little more traditional: cymbal swells, piano, ominous bells and stuff in the background. But hey, there’s electric guitar in there! It works. Most novel of the tracks is a pure 8-bit medley of themes from the original Super Mario Bros. — that’s right, the actual 1985 square-wave “chiptune”. If you are so inclined (and you’re an idiot like me), I have to recommend singing along to the underwater theme.
