I’m kinda curious… Who here plays Keys on RB3? I don’t and kinda would like to try but at the same time don’t want to either…

      So… Um. Keys?

I think the vast majority of people here play all instruments to one degree or another, that’s what a true fan of the game has to do to complete all the goals and unlock most things.

My two preferred instruments are drums and keys, but I play all instruments at varying levels. I can do Hard + breakneck on virtually any song, and can do Expert on any instrument on 3-dot songs or below. I love trying to play Expert Pro drums on high-tiered songs though, I may get ~75% only but it’s a great workout

Keys are really fun, you should try. Once you’ve unlocked enough keys goals, then you can play guitar on the keyboard

/Disclaimer: None of what I said applies to Pro Keys, Pro Bass, Pro Guitar for me (i.e. can’t play them to save my life)

For me, it’s Pro Keys or bust

That would be awesome. When I first saw the feature I thought my two years of high school piano lessons would help…but nope, did not help me at all

Anyways, added a much-needed poll to the OP

            Hard basic, easy pro.

I always have to look down to see if I’m pressing the right keys, though, namely because I still get lost with color grouping.

Pro Keys and Keytar here, always Expert no matter how suicidally stupid it is for me on Pro lol. When I actually use my keyboard I always do Pro, but I enjoy doing some Ho/Po-tastic Keys charts on plastic guitar too from time to time. Paradise By The Dashboard Light is waaaay beyond my Pro Keys skills but is one of my favorite Keytar charts

Just like with Guitar where you can unlock the ability to play keys on the guitar controller… Which I personally like as some songs for the “5 Star Expert Goal” were extremely easy on Keys but hard on others…

That and the hardest thing to do in my library is the Keys on this one song… (Then again, probably would be easy on a keyboard, not a guitar).

If you are referring to Discord, that one is 10 times as difficult on actual Keys than on Keytar, so is most difficult Keys songs really.

I used to play Pro-Keys to unlock a lot of things but I stopped when it began too hard to me. I recently started again and am currently playing 5-bubbles songs in Hard mode. But I just get 3-star usually. xD I also play in Normal with friends when I happen to play Pro-Keys.

I unlocked everything in 5-lane Keys using my guitar. ^^ Everything except I can’t reach 5-star in Expert on Antobodies by Poni Hoax, it’s such a pain in the ass. One day, I’ll try it with my keyboard and a friend so that I will play G, R and Y and he will only take care of B and O, that’s the only means I see to reach 5-star here. xD Also had trouble with 5-staring Roundabout in Expert 5-lane Keys (played with Guitar) but I succeeded alone!

Dealing with other instruments, I can play almost any song in Expert Guitar/Bass. Actually it’s ok in GH games but, as Rock Band asks you to be more precise in your rhythm and does not allow you to play with your 2 hands in awesomely fucking difficult parts, I can not play Eruption or Dragonforce songs in Expert Guitar for example, whereas I usually can in GH games. I should try with my RB The Beatles guitar, so that I could use HOPO in solos with the small frets…

I also sing a lot ‘cos it’s fun! And after unlocking all the Drums/Pro-Drums targets I could, I almots stopped playing Drums/Pro-Drums but I will start again as soon as I buy a 2nd kick pedal. I mostly play Expert in 4-bubbles and less songs, and Hard in 5-and-6-bubbles songs.

Can do 5 keys up to about Hard, Pro I can do Easy, sometimes Medium and rarely Hard. Not a chance at Pro Expert.

I like the keyboard especially if its a major part of the song, Bonnie Tyler – Total Eclipse of the Heart for example its a great song to play on pro keys when friends are round, it always brings out a laugh.

Love keys. I wish there were more songs with them.

I prefer 5-lane on Expert. I only play some songs on Pro, but only those that feel natural to play like Sing, by MCR or Separate Ways. 4-note chords are almost always a nightmare to play. It’s just memorization at that point.

I play Pro Keys almost exclusively now, though I play the other pro instruments from time to time. I’ll do Expert even when I can’t hit all the notes because there’s something about the challenge that’s so fun. Having 20+ buttons to choose from keeps you from just going through the motions, and you get to actually play the song!

I play Expert 5-lane and Hard to Expert Pro. I’ve had the keyboard for almost 2 years, so of course I’m gonna be good. Having a music theory class that mostly talks about piano helps too.

By that logic everyone who got the game on release day is playing strictly expert.

I’ve had the keyboard for 3 years…can barely play easy pro!

                  #409614

Pro Keys is really difficult to get good at. Even with years of experience, I couldn’t do expert when I first got the keyboard. The rock band interface is non-intuitive for pro keys, but once you get used to it, it becomes relatively easy to sightread. By starting at warmup tier and going up a tier at a time, you get progressively better. It just takes practice to get used to it.

4-note chords are almost always a nightmare to play. It’s just memorization at that point.

It’s only the non-standard 4-note chords that are really difficult. Most of the time it’s just a major or minor chord with an octave thrown in. Once you get used to how they “feel”, they become a lot simpler to play. If you’re not already used to playing a keyboard, it won’t come as naturally.

Then again, when the game throws

at you, I almost guarantee you’ll miss it unless you bother to learn what it actually is…

I always have to look down to see if I’m pressing the right keys, though, namely because I still get lost with color grouping.

It seems to me that the hardest part with learning pro keys is playing the notes without looking. It’s essential to know where your hands are at all times in order to master expert. Mostly, this involves being familiar with the shape of chords coming towards you and knowing what position your fingers have to be in and how far you have to move your hand to get to the right place on the keyboard. For example, I know instinctively how far apart my thumb and pinky have to be to play an octave, and if I see two notes that distance apart coming up on screen, I know exactly where to put my hand to play them.

The ranges of colours don’t really help all that much. More important are the little ridges on F and C that tell you where you are purely by feel. When you’re not playing a song that has a lot of black notes, these convey to you where your hand is, and you don’t have to take your eyes off the screen and risk losing your multiplier. When the song does have a lot of black notes, you can feel the groupings of black keys to find your position instead.

Having 20+ buttons to choose from keeps you from just going through the motions, and you get to actually play the song!

That’s exactly why it’s so fun! And the feeling of satisfaction you get when you finally 5-star the hardest songs is that much more awesome considering how much extra effort has to go into practicing compared to the 5-button version…
