I’ve been working on charting a song that has a various amount of time signature changes, but they also don’t record to a click. Is there an easy way to set a tempo map for a song that doesn’t have a consistent BPM let alone a consistent time signature? Right now I mapped out the whole song thanks to James Bloom and most of the time I have to put in notes that aren’t tied to the grid.

In a song like this, if you’re off grid, it’s a dreadful mistake. If you can’t figure out the time signature changes, stick with easier material.

Wrong time signature changes in no way make you place notes off grid, at worst they are on the upbeat when they should be on the downbeat and viceversa. Do your tempo map using the metronome and keep a steady beat unless the song has crazy changes. You can always put time signature changes later.

Ok I know off grid is bad that’s why I’m asking a question here. The band who recorded this did everything live so it’s not a constant BPM. Is there a way to make each measure line up perfectly even with the huge BPM changes? I know the time signatures and already implemented them in the song.

I don’t hear any huge BPM changes to be honest. Just place one tempo marker per measure with the correct BPM and everything lines up. ” src=”/wp-content/uploads/invision_emoticons/default_SA_smile.gif”> Tempo mapping is this: one marker per measure. Have you thought about checking out a ‘guitartab’ file or some other midi version that has all of the time changes mapped out already, importing that into Reaper, lining up ur wav and using that song map with all the time sig changes to ‘Q in’ ur tempo map? then u can choose wether or not to use any of the pre charted midi notes to base ur instrument charts on or chart from scratch if ur up for it?

 

either way, good luck to u sir, i commend u for not being put off by all of this song’s 4/4 to 5/8 & back to 4/4 then to 2/4 but only for 1 bar etc etc
