We have two dogs that shed a lot, and I’m wondering if that means I need to clean the air ducts more often. I read somewhere that pet dander can really build up in your ventilation system. Any pet owners here with some real-world experience?

I’ve got one cat and I clean mine every couple of years. Might be different with two big dogs though.

Pets definitely change the maintenance game when it comes to your HVAC system. Pet hair and dander can quickly clog filters and accumulate in ductwork, reducing air quality and system efficiency. I looked into the details on how often to clean ducts https://comfortclean.com/how-often-should-you-clean-your-ducts-why-air-duct-cleaning-is-an-important-for-a-clean-home/ and found that homes with multiple pets often require annual or biannual cleanings. We noticed a musty odor and occasional sneezing, especially when the heat or AC first came on. Once we had the ducts cleaned, those issues dropped off dramatically. The technician even showed us the buildup—and it was worse than we thought. For peace of mind and better air, I’d say once a year is a safe bet with pets around.
