What makes it dumb and disrespectful of the people who give up their free time to moderate the forums is that full albums are addressed in the rules of the Requests subforum. If anyone cannot be bothered to read the rules, the best they’re gonna get is dismissive. Ask any forum that ever existed.

I have seen a increase in people requesting full albums lately, and I would like to comment on that. We are not mad and you are not breaking any rules or anything, but I would like to say that you are doing yourself a disservice by requesting full albums.

If it wasn’t allowed, the thread would have been closed and the OP warned. OP is asking where to request full albums when in the rules we address specifically full albums and we discourage that. So, it’s not the best way to go to ask how or where to request something we specifically ask not to request because it doesn’t lead anywhere. I can see some user saying “Sorry for requesting something I know won’t get done and takes a ton of time but I truly believe
by would be incredible in Rock Band. Here’s to hoping!”. But “Hey, where do I request 4 full albums, dawgs?” is another matter. Again, allowed, hence no closing of the thread. And I characterized it as “dumb” only to reprise what you said, I don’t think it’s actually dumb but it’s not the best move ever.

You’re right. But it’s not a good idea to put down a new member for not following that “rule”, compared to other more important and obvious rules, if you’re trying to present a welcoming community environment. My main issue was with Nemo’s attitude. “Dismissive” was probably the wrong word, but it was unnecessary and disrespectful, in my opinion.

Unnecessary? Hardly. Disrespectful? Not applicable – I don’t owe you any respect. You come into our house, you follow our rules. Part of coming in here is learning to live with the resident attitudes. Mine is an acquired taste. I sure as heck am not going to change for you or some other newcomer. You, however, have the advantage of reading all that’s been posted before you make your first post. You chose not to do that. That already disappoints us, because the first thing you’re saying to our community, whether or not you intended it to be that way, is that you don’t care about our rules and you can’t be bothered to spend the minimum amount of time researching before you post something.

Again, I’m not OP, and I agree that they should’ve read the rules before posting. But since full-album requests are only discouraged in the rules, I don’t see a reason to be so hard on someone for making a full-album request. It sure doesn’t seem inviting to that person to stay in the community. If that’s how you want to present your website, that’s up to you. I’m not gonna tell you to change your attitude. I just don’t think you’re encouraging any new members to join the community, if you can’t forgive small mistakes like this.

It. Gets. Annoying.This is a far broader discussion than an obscure thread in a subforum allows, but let’s just get to the main point. Maybe you think the way moderation works here is based on emotions: we see someone doing something, we get cranky, we post snappy comments. That way, you say, people are being put off. This is far from the truth.
We chose years ago to enforce a number of rules and every section of these forums has a different urgency to it. For example, Song requests is where authors who spend hours and hours on a song are asked by perfect strangers who could do the same but won’t (yes, ANYONE can author) to do the work for them. For this reason, rules here are enforced vigorously: authors must be respected for a community like this to work. Customs discussions on the other hand has very lax rules: if you want to contribute, you are totally welcome. Etc. etc. And this address the emotion part: regardless of the words used, there’s a specific method.
The second part of your thought process is: this way people are put off. Have you taken a look at the other rhythm gaming communities/Discord/etc. where rules are not enforced? You usually have to take a shower after reading some threads. Were you around last December? Our community raised more than 7,000 dollars in a month for charity. Do you see where I’m going? Maybe we lose some users who are too lazy to read the rules. Maybe we lose some potential author who couldn’t however be bothered to even read the thread where the link to the docs are. Maybe some of those go on Reddit to slander us, confirming it was a good call to kick them out. On the other hand we have a vibrant community that works very well, where people feel so good that they want to give back, a lot, and where people who put in dozens of hours each week are respected and loved.
All of the above is a choice, not some random action of kids who want to show their power over community users. The results are 5 years of a community that keeps growing and that produces full band customs even with pro instruments on a daily basis. Maybe you don’t author. Maybe you don’t have to talk daily to authors who release 10 songs in a day for which the first 2 comments are “Ok but can we have more
” and that are frustrated, and for that reason might give up or take a break. We do, and they are the engine of the community, not new users who cannot be bothered to even read quick rules. Everything we do protects them so that the rest of the community can enjoy some great free content. I just don’t think you’re encouraging any new members to join the community, if you can’t forgive small mistakes like this.
What exactly have we done to him? HIs thread is open, no sanction whatsoever has been issued because he is within the rules.

As a member who’s been on both sides of the member/moderator field I can say I’ve seen some very helpful and friendly interactions between newcomers and admins and I’ve seen some that could have been better discussed. Even so, some things need to be taken with a grain of salt, not everything that isn’t 100% Canadian hippie on World Peace Day’s level of politeness means that it’s rude and unwelcoming. If you’re not satisfied with an answer, wait until the one you want comes along. That’s all there is to it.
You ask us to understand the feeling of being a newcomer and we get that. In return, we want you to understand the feeling of being a mod. Nemo’s right – it gets incredibly tedious seeing the same posts day after day of the same rules being broken in the same manner by people who don’t take five minutes to read the bold posts at the top of each subforum. So yes, we tend to get rather irritable having to repeat ourselves over and over again (luckily this isn’t a tech support forum). This also goes for people who act how farottone stated above with begging for lengthy requests and getting impatient and frustrated when they aren’t fulfilled without themselves even trying to learn the difficult and lengthy process of charting.
All this of course isn’t even in the context of this topic. In fact this topic has nothing to do with how this banter escalated. The OP in question asked if they could post requests in the requests topic, I’m sure you too said “what do you think?” There are probably better ways to have put it but Nemo’s response is as apt as any. I don’t see why this needed to become as escalated as it did.

There’s different flavors in this community so I don’t understand why everything has to be pinned on two people. Don’t all of us make up the community? Trust me when I tell you I know how it feels to be a newcomer – I can send you PMs that would turn away the strong over something I thought was innocent. But I’m still here because I’m still amazed that I can create something in a game I love.
Point is, there’s ALWAYS going to be a level of response from some that won’t be liked. Yup, welcome to the world wide web (and life in general). But damn Banshee nailed it when he said, “If you’re not satisfied with an answer, wait until the one you want comes along.” Good god I’m going to write that in the sky.
TrojanNemo’s TrojanNemo. Farottone’s Farottone. These people aren’t changing (nor do i think they should for the record). But there’s others here too that you haven’t named. So if you’re a newcomer feeling discouraged, my advice is to hang here for a while, learn how to make customs so you don’t need to rely on anyone but yourself, and reach out to those you feel would be most inline with your personal style. If you read through these forums, you could easily figure it out. If you get responses you don’t like, disengage and move on.
