Finally settled in to my new home. Woo Portland.

I don’t have a background in customs, since I’ve been doing RBN since forever instead. And I’m not done with that yet, but I will be, and there are certainly customs I’d rather do than my actual obligations.

Nonetheless I am gonna contribute, and I am gonna be super unreliable.

    Century of Jazz project

Somewhere around 1914/1915 (etymology is tough to pin down), “jazz” became the name of the music genre. Thus, early next year I’d like to put out a “Century of Jazz” mega-pack that celebrates one of the under-appreciated forces behind rock and roll as we know it. Classic jazz (in all its forms), modern jazz (in all its forms), everything in between. Any and all contributions are appreciated.

Big Star – “Don’t Lie to Me”

    — I can do this one off an mp3 since it’s all talkies and there’s no keys so my terrible pitch sense shan’t fail me too badly!

    — Radio edit, because I’m not that much of a lunatic.

I’m going to use this as evidence in the Attempted Murder case against you, as authoring 14 minutes of rap vocals would kill me. I would be dead.

But to that point. Part 1 is a little over 4 minutes, so Part 2 would hit under 10. Making both Magma-safe, so we can get lipsync for the whole thing. I don’t know the technical stuff here yet, but is it possible to append/concat the lipsync results and get around the “lipsync breaks after 10 minutes” issue? ‘Cause I really don’t want to have 4 minutes of rapping with no lipsync when there’s nothing else in the venue worth looking at anyway.

I don’t know if anyone figured out a way to successfully hex edit them together…

In that case, bugger. I’ll probably just do Pt. 1, it’s what everyone knows anyway.

I also did a lot of midi hunting, and put a bunch of picks in the first post. Not officially claiming them until I give what I found a better look, but just in case any of those are already in the works…

Also. Surely someone has done some of these They Might Be Giants songs, right? ‘Cause if not here’s three mega-packs worth…

Oh, I just assumed so because you had a post where you said you did “Walkie Talkie Man,” and that guy’s channel had “Walkie Talkie Man,” so I put two and two together and… apparently I got twelve.

Well, nonetheless that chart has… room for improvement, certainly. 😡

Yeah, someone else had also done Walkie Talkie Man, as I found out finishing mine up. Our vocal charts were eerily similar (so much so that I think I nicked a couple of his phrase placements when I was comparing them) but the others differ iirc.

My first proper custom is Gary Numan – “Cars”. Because it’s dumb simple. Notes on the current version (b050113):

    • There’s a lyrics typo I forgot to fix.
    • No venue yet.
    • I haven’t recorded a dryvox for lipsync.
    • Mix needs a little more work.
    • The version of the song I have is only about 3:30 and fades out; I’ve seen info that says the song should be closer to 4:00. Don’t know what happened there, don’t remember where I got it from (it was early college era). I think the end drags enough as it is, but I want comments and advice on how the ending was approached.

Well, you handled the fade-out better than I handle them. Then again, I don’t handle them and chart as much of the fade-out as my ears allow.

One thing I wanna point out is the first tambourine break. I usually prefer to leave a little more space between the last hit and the next word so the singer has time to get the mic to their mouth (and their thumb to the Back button). Mostly because I don’t think anyone wants another “Flathead.”

Also, a proper count-in would be dandy.

Everything with the “guitar” seems all honky-doory Expert and Hard, even though they’re the same chart. Then again, the song is so simple, there’s not much you can do about it. One alternate I can offer to the Medium difficulty’s ending riff would be Y

    >B->Y->R->Y->R->G. Nothing really wrong with it as it is, my suggestion just goes with my authoring style of green being the lowest note in a wrapped up sequence. For Easy, I’d move the opening riff to O—->B->O->Y.

I’ll be updating Cars and the Danza tracks tonight.

Question for peoples (mostly the C3 coordinators): is there any preference on packs vs. singles? Just about any song I can think to consider doing, I quickly think of some artist or theme pack to toss it in. And half of those, I can actually get material to make them work. I have no issue spacing out my releases into eclectic packs, vs. a more frequent stream of random singles. So I’m curious if people think I should stop looking at packs or start looking at more packs.

I don’t think there’s a formal preference either way, but speaking personally, I would rather see a pack from an artist than three singles at a rate of one per month.

Agreed. How about theme/genre packs? The jazz pack in the OP is starting to become a pet project, but it’s also starting to splinter into three or four different genre packs (thinking about jazz century/swing revival/jazz royalty, just so far).

(I like discussing and planning way more than is healthy. :x)
